Having some “down” time

No ducks were actually harmed

Well, that’s not entirely accurate. We had a really “fowl” moment when we first brought the ducks home. We got our ducks (which required more than an hour of deliberation about which one was better than the other and one argument about how a bunny was not part of the deal) and brought them home in a box. Bug was hopping from one foot to the other in anticipation of putting them in their pen and getting food and water for them. I opened the box on the floor and one of the ducks lay crumpled in the corner of the box. I didn’t have to take but one glance to know that he was (shhh. D-E-A-D) Bug got very concerned about the “broke” duck and said he has a boo-boo. Being one who swore that as a  mother, I would always tell the truth to my children, I agreed that he was sick and we would take him to the doctor. I made a phone call back to the farm store and told them what had happened and they agreed to replace it. It wasn’t until I got back to the store, that the manager pointed out that the lady who had “boxed” our ducks put them in a fertilizer/insecticide box that still contained granules. Nice. I left the girls in the car for the healing (exchange) and we came home with our “all better” duck.

Belly is very interested in them but Bug is in love with her baby ducks and has watched them all day.

(For the duck advocates out there: Yes I know that they are ducks and did research on how to care for them properly, when to introduce them to water and where/when to let them go so that they are safe and can fend for themselves. Our daughter will probably never let them go and they will remain in our family for many years. This breed does not migrate and are domestic. If PETA protests on my front porch, I will find you and chastise you. Then I will welcome them in for a good pot of duck stew)

For now we are enjoying a little “down” time. Talk about getting “peeps” in your Easter basket!

  1. My mom had a pet duck named Moses because she plucked him up out of the water! He lived a very long and prosperous ducky life on the farm in Indiana! Enjoy your ducks!

  2. I want one, those are adorable!

  3. Awww! How sweet! You’re a brave momma!
